Potty Training

I have a dear friend, Kelsey, who wrote an email to myself and some other moms for any advice we had on potty training. Here is a list of reasons why I should never give anyone advice on potty training.

1. It took Jaxon nearly 9 months to be completely potty trained after he was 3
2. I went through 3 different toilets to try and potty train
3. I hated the hand washing part and sometimes "forgot" to. (I know, gross)
4. I used every threat known to man
5. I got my internal patience meter from my dad, and it tops off REALLY fast
6. I read every book on the subject and it was all nonsense (ONE DAY potty training? Puh-lease!)
7. I loaded Jaxon with candy at the mere thought of using his potty
8. I eventually threw his beloved binkie into his poop filled diaper and told him he would not have binkies until he could go potty in the toilet. (that's what finally did it)

So I don't know that my way would sell many books, and I really wouldn't want to pass it on as good advice, but at least it worked! Poor Sage

This is great Stephanie. I am also one that never gives advice on this subject. I just always told myself that they most likely would be potty trained by kindergarten so why worry about it. I love your list though, it's perfect.

That is so funny. I love the binky in the diaper. I finally just told Kaeson "no more diapers." I was so sick of them, so I took them away. Of course that was after he had been practically potty trained at least two times over a 6 month period. Too much back and forth for me. Once I took the diapers away, he was trained within three days. I still have no idea how truly to potty train, but it worked for Kaeson.

We are more similar than you think. That's all I have to say.

Very funny. I kept hearing that advice to not stress and let the child decide when to potty train. Then when Maren hit 3 1/2 and hadn't "decided" to potty train yet I had to MAKE her. It's not fun anyway you look at it. I am so glad to be done with that stage of life. SOOOOO glad.

My only advice is wait until summer. Having them run around half naked helps. Truly.

I mean really, who wants to expose their bum to the cold when you can just stay all dressed to poop?

Whenever I was at my whits end with potty training...even to the point of tears...Jeff would hug me and say "Do YOU wear daipers....then I would laugh and just let it go!" Oh...and can I say pull ups are a crock! They are just a prettier more expensive diaper for them to pee in. ....when ever someone asks me about potty training (or raising 2 yr olds in general) I just laugh and sarcastically say...I'ts a JOY!

it is good to know that others have struggled with potty training. i always have to remind myself that it will eventually happen.

If only I had thought of the binkie!!!! too funny. I had a hard time with Kainoa, Keawe was a piece of cake. And Makaio, well I am just waiting for warm weather so I can put him in the back yard so he can understand what his body is doing. Hope it works. :)

Wow, I'm so behind on your blog and intend to catch up so forgive my oodles of comments all in one night.
I have one question on this subject, and am only saying what Im going to say because it's you and I feel I can use the sarcasm a little...
What were you doing potty training a child that still had a binky!?!? See for me, I see it in steps...My kid may still have a binky at three years old, but I'll be darn well changing diapers still!!
Anyhow, this post CRACKED me up quite a bit! Awesome techniques! Love it!
