I absolutely can not rid my heart and mind of sadness for the boy who lost his life this weekend and his family. Ross Barfuss, a 16 year old in my ward, was at the beach when he swam into the ocean to save the life of an 11 year old boy who he did not know. He has still not been found. I lost my mother at a young age, so I have felt the pain of death, but now that I am a mother it just doesn't seem possible for life to continue after losing a child. I haven't been able to sleep, and my mind has been clouded with thought of sadness and death, until tonight when I saw his mother on the news and she said

"We'll miss Ross, we always will, but home is not a building, home is in your heart, and that's where Ross is."

What courage and strength this amazing woman has, and what faith in our Heavenly Fathers plan for families to be together for eternity. My sister also helped me realize that there should be no sadness for Ross. He is in a better place. The prayers that have gone out to this family have been numberless I'm sure, but please join me in continuing them.

I just still can't believe that the words of the mother who lost her son were the words I needed to hear to feel comfort. Here is the link to the video of this amazing woman and family.

I had not seen that coverage. Thank you for posting it. What an amazing family. My heart goes out to them. I only knew Ross a tiny bit but I also thought he was a great kid and a fabulous example to the younger boys that knew him.

I always hate to hear stories like that. Now that I'm a mother, I think a lot about the chances I have of losing one of my own children. Many times at night, I check on my kids just to make sure they are breathing. I know it sounds silly to do that, but it is my greatest fear. But after seeing that, I suppose it just shows that Heavenly Father will give you the strength to handle anything, even death, if you turn to Him. I guess you are living proof of that.

thank you for the video link! that is one of the few i have not seen. it is hard to see the family and the grief that is so apparent in their eyes and on their faces. the gospel brings the strength needed in a time like this!

I honestly don't see how a mother could handle that trial. It just sounds so devastating. Bless her heart. I will pray for her and I too am so thankful for the gospel especially during a death because of the knowledge that families can be together forever. It's so wonderful. But that's a great story you told and how she made that comment. What a strong woman. I did wonder though, which boy was him...the 11 year old, or the 15 year old and did the other one survive? So sad!
