My mom always had a half eaten Snickers bar in her purse. Now granted, to a young child something only has to happen a few times to make it feel like always, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't just my imagination. She loved Snickers, and I loved rummaging through her purse to take little bites of it from time to time. I don't have many memories left of my mom that are my own, but this is one, and I hold it very dear.
Segue to tonight.
I had to stop by the grocery store at 11:30pm (every Saturday night at 11:30pm) and I heard a little voice calling me from the candy aisle. When I looked to see who it might be, I noticed a Milky Way waving furiously at me. I also noticed that it boasted more caramel filling. Well, who am I to object to such an offer. I threw it in the basket and tried my best to ignore it. The cashier was kind enough to let me know that they were on sale 3 for a dollar and asked if I wanted to grab a few more. I laughed, "no thanks, one will do me just fine!" He rang it up and put it on the counter next to me so I could stash it in my purse. On my way out to the car I pulled it out, opened the top and took a bite. I only needed a bite tonight, I thought. I'll just save the rest for later. It wasn't until I got home and had to get something out of my purse and saw my partially eaten candy bar that it hit me.

I am just like my mom!!!
I laughed to myself as I imagined my mom shopping late on a Saturday night and noticing the florescent lights shining from within the Snickers bar that I'm sure were just to hard to pass up. I could just see her walking back to her Honda and just taking a small bite, because that's all she really needed and then stashing it away in her purse for later.
So here's to you mom! Thanks for helping my justify keeping a candy bar ready at a moments notice. Because you never know when your going to need a bite!

Fun post. I loved reading this story.
That's the best thing I've heard all year. I love your mom. Miss her lots sometimes. What do you think they're up there doing? Trying to turn us into them no doubt. Oh well, we probably can't do better. They are the best!
What a great memory, Stephanie. I am sure your mom got a chuckle out of you buying that candy bar.
well, at least you let yourself enjoy just one bite! as of right now, i currently have a butterfinger, a milky way midnight, and m&m's dark in my purse. They have been in there unopened now for over 3 months! who knows when i will actually break one out and eat it!
it's fun to see the little things that we can recognize in ourselves that are from our parents!
what a beautiful story, and fun memory.
it always makes me think what memories my children will have of me, as they grow up.
Mom surely didn't know what an impact those half-eaten snickers would have on her kids. We all continue to talk about it and all of my kids know that a Snicker was Grandma Ardie's favorie candy bar. Funny the things that create memories.
That is so neat. Jon's mom died when he was young young too, so I have seen him have lots of these "Ah Ha" moments too. He loves to know that part of his mom still lives on in him, just as part of your Mom lives on in you.
I do the same thing! And my kids know to rummage around in the side pockets of the driver door of my van. And I can't really yell at them for sneaking my candy, since I'm just as bad! Thanks for sharing this cute memory.
By the way, just so all of Stephanie's fans know, she has a HYMN she wrote and she is going to submit it the stake RS for the April enrichment, right Steph? Can't wait to see it.
That is so sweet. I bet the tiny Milky Way voice was actually your mum ;)
Add me to your msn so we can chitter-chatter about Dental School Widowness and other such wonderful topics.

Love it!! That is so cute! Enjoy those little bites and the wonderful memories of your mom!
Wow, that was a good one Steph! I remember mom being somewhat particular about letting me steal bites from her snickers bars!
